C 6.7. Ink flake off; detachment of the parchment

Separation or peeling of the layers of parchment and/or ink. Detachment of the parchment surface.

There are several reasons for the detachment of the parchment surface and ink lettering. Degradation of parchment can lead to internal stresses, which can result in the detachment of the parchment, i.e. if the parchment dries too much and the water content falls below 10%, the parchment may become brittle over time and begin to peel away. Surface detachment may also be accompanied by ink loss. Even if the surface does not become detached, the ink lettering may still peel off if the ink is not absorbed and does not sufficiently adhere to the surface. The likelihood of this damage is further increased by mishandling and unfavourable storage conditions.
