A 1.2. Axilla or the area where limbs are attached to the body

The axilla is the area where visible changes may exist on the edges of a parchment document.
The texture and nature of the skin on the limbs and axilla differ significantly from the remaining area. The skin in these areas in denser, and therefore, it is more difficult to mechanically process these areas and to thin them by stretching. The older the animal, the greater the differences in the characteristics of the different areas. Based thereon, compared to the remaining surface, the parchment in the area of the limbs may be of a different thickness and the surface treatment may be uneven. These areas are often the cause of the parchment’s degradation and deformation.
